ottela Panduga is usually observed by the Muslims of Nellore in the month when Muharram falls. This event was considered a very significant part of the celebrations as the 12 martyrs were stated to have laid down their lives for the cause of the spreading their religion and did not hesitate to wage a battle with the opponents in the 18th century. The battle took place at Gandavaram, 25 km from Nellore city.As per the legend, the 12 warriors were killed and beheaded in that battle with their horses carrying their beheaded bodies to the banks of the Swarnala Cheruvu in those days. Ever since, the place became a popular destination for the devotees and rulers.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title='ROTTELA PANDUGA' OFF TO A COLOURFUL START )〕 The most important and highly venerated part of the festival is the ‘gandha mahotsavam’ (sandal paste utsavam), which will take place at the dargah on night.
